This week we need to start working on our concept map. Does anyone have any ideas so far?
-Taylor
I think we should do subtitles like Exercise, Diet, and benfits to working out in the morning vs at night, we could do time management to fit in workouts.. or something like that?
- Kati
The concept map has to be about staying healthy right? So, we could do a Subtitles of Exercise, Diet, Health Concerns for not staying active, we could do that and branch off from there?
ReplyDeleteAlso, more subtitles if need be those were just starters. Also, Have you heard from jessica?
DeleteYes, she should be sending me her gmail account soon so we can add her to the group too!
ReplyDeleteI think thats a great start! I looked at the sample concept map and it goes further into incorporating many different aspects such as vocabulary, and different subjects too. I was thinking we could do a whole section on nutrition and the food groups and maybe include recipes for healthy snacks. We could do another branch about sports and exercise and include specific activities and things like that. I really like the idea of doing health concerns too!
Have you ever used the bubbl.us concept map?
I have not used this before, but it was the free one so i figure we can work on it together. do you live in Kalamazoo? If need be we could meet up sometime to work on it cause working seperately is a pain until we get used to it. Also, those are really great ideas the recipes are a unique idea as well.
ReplyDeleteIt is pretty straight forward to use (we used it in my math class) so we can try to make one and post it here to edit and make changes before we turn it in Sunday. Also, this is a rough draft so it doesn't have to be perfect!
ReplyDeleteHey guys! I'm finally in sorry it took so long to get involved I promise I'm not always this behind! I'm in the process of jotting down ideas now and will let you guys know what I come up with in a little awhile. :)
ReplyDeleteAlso, I just posted our Blog URL on eLearning for that part of the assignment
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteOkay so this is pretty long but I figured that since I’m not in Kalamazoo and can’t meet up with you guys I’m going to put every single one of my ideas on here lol. Let me know what you guys like and don’t like!
ReplyDeleteSo I was reading through your comments and I think those are all really good ideas! I definitely think we should have a section on nutrition and food groups we can do a lot with that and linking it to the new “Choose My Plate” guidelines. I just took a dietetics and nutrition class last semester so I have a lot of fresh information. I guess one thing that we need to figure out is what age group we’re targeting for this, right? At first I was thinking first or second grade would be good so we could go over the basic principles of eating healthy etc. but I realized maybe an older grade like 4th or 5th would be good so that they can understand the more in depth concepts of nutrition and use the internet, conduct interviews, etc. And from what I am seeing PBL’s need a driving question like “How can nutrition and physical activity help us live healthier lives?”…Or some other open ended/complex question that will take students a lot of time and research to answer. Do you guys have any ideas for one? Plus we need a “Big Project” idea and have that in the middle of our concept map. Maybe “How to Make Healthy Choices” or “Lets Get Healthy”. And I thought of some subtitle ideas with activities that could go along with them. We do not have to use these just some ideas!
“Origin of food”-Have kids do some research and make posters (or something online since we need to incorporate technology) on different types of food/farming techniques
“5 food groups” (like Taylor suggested)–Research how much of each food group we actually need. Could have kids interview friends or family on what they think and put together results in graphs. Or we could have them take some kind of inventory checklist home with important foods from each food group and see if they have them at home and call it “whats in my cupboards”
“Digestive system” –Find out which vitamins and minerals aid in digestive activities and what foods they are most abundant in
“Serving sizes” –Have kids answer the question of whether or not typical serving sizes contributes to obesity and also interview parents/friends on what they believe normal serving sizes are compared to what they actual are. They could make some kind of visual for correct serving sizes
“Food labels” –Have kids discover which food labels are accurate or deceiving and how this contributes to health issues (what claims can food companies get away with without being completely true)
“Physical activity” -Could have kids track their daily physical activity and graph the results and compare to daily recommendation. Like Kati said we could have them compare working out in the morning vs at night. Have kids research best cardio and strength building exercises and work with groups to make games out of them to show that working out can be fun
“My health” -Kids give their interpretation of what it means to be healthy and present it with powerpoint. They could use Food Tracker on the “ChooseMyPlate” website to track their eating habits for a several days…it’s a really cool tool that has nutrition information on almost every common types of food/brands and all you have to do is keep track of what you eat and put it in the website and it gives you nutrition summaries and vitamin/mineral breakdowns.
“Health terms” – Got this idea from the sample concept map but it’s a really good idea!
And I am totally a visual person so I had to put all of my ideas into a concept map with bubble.us I uploaded it in another post I hope you guys can figure out how to view it. It is completely just ideas we can use any or no parts of it. Let me know if you guys think it is on the right track or if it is anything like you guys were thinking! Ill get back on sometime tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThe concept map looks great, and targeting towards upper elementary would be best, i think! Also, maybe we should add in some how long per day we're supposed to be active or something like that.
ReplyDeleteIn high school, we had a group that mentored middle schoolers and one unit was about being healthy and nutrition. We set up an interactive food pyramid where there were different tables for each food group. Students divided up into groups and visited each station. At each station there were snacks for the kids to try and a short presentation about what those foods do to your body and also what a serving size of that food group looks like. To make it a more PBL styled activity, we could have the students divide into groups and be in charge of a food group station and maybe make a video or something like that? They could hold their own little "food group fair" for the school to walk through as well.
ReplyDeleteThats a really good idea i like it a lot! What do you think our big topic title should be? I'll put that as the middle bubble on our concept map. Let's go off this idea for the next steps of the assignment

ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about making our big topic "Living a Healthy Life" instead of "Making Healthy Choices"? I think by making it focused on a lifestyle, it makes it more relatable to life in general and the real world, which is what's focused on in PBL approach. By making it a broad topic, it also gives us some wiggle room on what our project will be if we need to make any changes in the future.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea, I changed it!
